FRaC: FMCW-Based Joint Radar-Communications System Via Index Modulation

Dual function radar communications (DFRC) systems are attractive technologies for autonomous vehicles, which utilize electromagnetic waves to constantly sense the environment while simultaneously communicating with neighbouring devices. An emerging approach implementing DFRC is embed information in waveforms via index modulation (IM). Implementation of schemes vehicular gives rise strict constraints terms cost, power efficiency, and hardware complexity. In this paper, we extend IM-based utilizing sparse arrays frequency modulated continuous (FMCWs), popular automotive their simplicity low The proposed FMCW-based radar-communications system (FRaC) operates at reduced cost complexity by transmitting a number radio modules, combined narrowband FMCW signalling. This achieved array sparsification transmission, formulating virtual multiple-input multiple-output combining signals one coherent processing interval, transmitted randomized manner. Performance analysis numerical results show that scheme achieves similar resolution performance compared wideband operating large receive aperture, requiring less overhead. For subsystem, FRaC higher rates improved error dual-function signalling based on conventional phase modulation.
